My inner radio geek
I volunteer as a controller and allocator for the British Red Cross in London, running the operations room in Enfield and our National Communications Vehicle for routine duty cover and special events such as the Royal Wedding and the British 10k run. I have extensive experience of medical dispatch and control of ambulance crews and have deployed medical resources at some of London’s biggest recent events, keeping the wider environment and planning considerations – such as road closures, crowd dynamics, weather and security measures – in mind at all times.
I am confident using a radio and, being British Red Cross trained, adhere to excellent levels of radio protocol. I am trained as an Airwaves user and have undertaken training at the London Ambulance Emergency Operations Centre in Bow. I can use CAD systems and am able to listen to multiple channels simultaneously and prioritise the information I process and log. I have experience of being in control and command teams and attending crash meetings and worked in the London Ambulance Service Event Control Room during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
During London 2012, I was trained in and adhered to the various reporting procedures and was our venue’s main point of contact with the Main Operations Centre. I also have experience of collating event logs for British Red Cross and other events, such as Pride in Brighton where I managed the Event Control Room. I have trained volunteers in the use of our CAD system and logging systems at Red Cross and also researched alternative reporting systems in preparation for the organisation’s role at the London 2012 games. The range of large-scale events I have been involved in has given me extensive experience of crisis management and I have, amongst other things, called out the Air Ambulance, directed a full site evacuation and taken part in an invacuation, managed a team through a bomb scare and acted as loggist during a Gold command meeting following the death of a pilot at an airshow.
I am an experienced member of control room teams and enjoyed working in the Park Operations Centre at London 2012. I have been involved in the running of the Red Cross’ Switters Operations Room in Enfield since its opening and am proud to be part of its management team and be involved in the continual development of its operation. Last year I devised a standard introductory training course for new recruits to the operations room for the British Red Cross. I also gained a great deal working in the LAS Event Operations Room in Bow and in the ECR for the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend in 2012.
